Golden Compass

Golden Compass
Could anyone explain why Catholics are so pissed with the Golden Compass?
It hasn't even opened yet yet loads of snippets are everywhere.

could it be a sly ploy to get some free publicity?

Trust me....it's not! In US all kinds of Christian groups are protesting this fantasy film (which has not opened yet). That is because the books were written by an atheist and in these fictional books, the kids supposedly kill a character "God" (which doesn't actually die, but that's beside the point).

The point is that many are unable to deal with anything that challenges their faith (including the works of fiction). Did you forget the protests and speeches about Da Vinci Code??? Or even Harry Potter? People go nuts over books and call them evil, satanic, etc..... most times without even reading them. "The sheep just follows the herd"

Many in US still despise the Beatles, because Lennon once said that he thought they were more popular than Jesus. It's the reality.

I suggest you buy the book, Golden Compass, and read it. Then you decided for yourself. I read all Harry Potter books and saw nothing wrong in them, in fact, they celebrated Christmas at Hogwarts, and the books were classic "good vs evil", with good winning each time. Do yourself a favour, and read the books before you take others opinions.

BTW, most banned books in the USA turned out to become classics and are now read in universities and some lower schools. Times change, so don't give in to popular opinion.

Agree with redwriter (and you know which side of the religion poll I stand on). Loved the Harry Potter books, they are just a classic good vs evil story. The Golden Compass is from the same writer as the Dark Materials trilogy isn't it? They were excellent - though I can see why the Catholic Church might see them as an attack which they clearly were. Absolutely no reason to ban them or protest about them.

I thought GC was similar to Narnia hence the question. After having seen most of the seventeen clips I would say about the only difference is that Nicole Kidman is slightly more fetching then Tilda Swinton.

PerryCo is on a distinguished road
Anti-Religious Movie

- The Vatican on Wednesday condemned the film "The Golden Compass," which some have called anti-Christian, saying it promotes a cold and hopeless world without God.

This should answer your questions. I say, read the books, and decide for yourself.
