Taking pets to Hong Kong

Hi, I am moving out to Hong Kong in Jan 08 and plan to take my pet cat with me. Having never done this before I worry that I have all the paperwork in order. I am following the advice provided on the Hong Kong Agricutural & Fisheries Web site, which seems fairly straight forward, but would appreciate advice or info from anyone with first hand experience. For example does anyone now whether the Microchips used in UK are compatible with the microchip readers used in Hong Kong. My other concern is getting the cat from the Airport Cargo Area to our appartment in Hong Kong. I am trying to aviod public transport (trains/buses/taxis) because the cat is the worst traveller you could imagine and I wouldn't want to wish that on any member of public. So I am trying to find a pet carrier company or individual who would drive my cat and family from the airport. Any advice or experiences would be gratefully appreciated.

Hi,

I just flew my cats to HK last weekend. Regarding the paperwork, all the information on the Hong Kong Agricultural & Fisheries are correct. You can fax them your documents, they will screen them for you. If there is any problem, they will let you know.

The process to collect the animals from the cargo terminal is quite simple but time consuming. It took me about 1.5 hours to complete the all process (clear the shipment, go to the HKAF for clearance, cat need to get the injection, clear the custom...). And the cargo terminal is a rather large building so if you can get someone to drive you, that would indeed make your life much easier.

Your cat should have an AVID brand microchip, or it will get another one on arrival. Try contacting Export-a-pet or Ferndale Kennels and Cattery to pick your cat up from the airport. Contact details for both can be found in other pets threads here. The process is really pretty straightforward, but it is worth having an agency pick the cat up on the HK end, take it through customs and deliver it to your apartment - the fees aren't too bad.

Thanks for this, I will use the screening service.
