| | | Ideas for New Year Hi,
I'm going to be in town for New Year (Dec 31st not Chinese New Year). This is my first trip to HK so I'm looking for ideas of where to head for a memorable NYE.
Thanks in advance! | |

| | Welcome to HK.
Actually, if you're looking for some traditional stuff, you have to wait till Chinese new year, which is in Feb. Otherwise, the new yr eve in HK is not much difference from else where.

| | | go out and get wasted. Most bars/disco's will be charging entrance fee which you will get you 1 or 2 drinks free.
depends on which area you are.
1. Lan Kwai Fong will be very packed, i would suggest you stay away from there, Loads of police and the roads will be closed off, the walking direction will be controlled, there will be one entry point and one exit point. too much hassle.
2. Wan Chai will be packed but the bars are bigger, not as expensive as LKF.
PM me if you want to join our group, we will be partying in Wan Chai.

| | | Last year I specifically came back from a business trip in Thailand to spend new year's eve with my wife in Hong Kong.
We went down to TST to experience the countdown... and what we assumed would be a fireworks show starting off the new year.
We waited among the crowds...then the countdown came...fantastic energy! ...and then.... NOTHING! No fireworks...nothing!!! everybody just went home.
Was this just a one-time disappointment, or can the same be expected for this year?
On the same note, my dad is coming to HK this year to celebrate the new year with me and my wife. Any recommendations on what we should do? where we should go?
Going to the bars and getting wasted will obviously not be an option.
I made temporary hotel reservations at Langham Place in Mong Kok...just to have rooms ...but then what?
Are there any interesting events going?
Guess I'm kinda stuck here. Please help!

Co-sponsored by Henderson Land Development Co Ltd and Sun Hung Kai Properties Ltd, the spectacular “A Symphony of Lights – New Year Countdown” is set to become another signature event that draws international attention.
The major countdown event will commence 20 minutes before midnight on 31 December 2007. Staging from the rooftop and also on the façade of Hong Kong’s iconic ifc2, the first time ever for Hong Kong, the countdown will begin with the multi-media show A Symphony of Lights on both sides of Victoria Harbour, which will be enhanced with pyrotechnic displays. And just 20 seconds before the stroke of midnight, special pyrotechnic effects will be added to light up the sides of ifc2 to welcome the new year. Other designated buildings will join the pyrotechnic display on their rooftops for two minutes after the clock strikes midnight.
The Hon James Tien, Chairman of the HKTB, said the event would once again highlight to the world Hong Kong’s dazzling skyline by night. “Experiences have shown us that cosmopolitan cities such as New York, London, Paris and Sydney usually have large-scale countdown activities to welcome the new year, and often enough, events of such usually catch great international media attention. I am sure the countdown extravaganza will put our city under spotlight and enhance our image as a fascinating cosmopolitan city,” Mr Tien said.
International media such as Reuters and Earth TV have already agreed to provide complete live coverage of the event. The HKTB is also liaising with a number of electronic media partners in Mainland China and other parts of the world to arrange live or delayed broadcast of the programme.
Visitors and local residents can enjoy the countdown at various locations. The best vantage points include the Wan Chai Promenade and the Expo Promenade around the Golden Bauhinia Square on Hong Kong Island, the waterfront area from the Avenue of Stars to the Hong Kong Cultural Centre, as well as the West Kowloon Waterfront Promenade on Kowloon side. The Television Broadcasts Limited will also arrange live broadcast of the event.

| | | the main focus of the fireworks would be in ifc2 so if you need to be across the harbour to appreciate it
r66 food quality has not been good over the past few years. and they have two seatings for ny eve. call them instead of emailing them. if your pregnant wife is sensitive, then r66 may not be the right place for you as she could feel a little seasick. think of eating on a moving train.
you could try marco polo prince, they have a new restaurant called cucina. or the one near star ferry called pierside

Yellowtip! Never ever mention James Tien, Hon or otherwise on this site, and the new year will go well for you.
