Pissed off...left money at the ATM

Ok, I have never done this before but have always laughed at people when they have done it. Now I have done the same !

Last night as I was drawing money at the IFC Mall HSBC ATM, I get a phone call that my kid is in hospital. SO I rush out and much later at the hospital I relaise that I have left the the HKD3,000 I had drawn on the ATM mhn !!!

All I can recall is that there was a nice lady behind me who also was wanting to use the ATM. She must have seen it because as I left the ATM , I moved to the side to finish talking to the wife.

Obviously in my rush I left the money at the ATM - how stupid is that ?

The question to the folks here is, is there ANY point in even asking HSBC is someone had returned the money or should I just forget it !

I did get the transaction receipt but threw it away !!

I can't belive I have done this....but does it happen often to others ?

Not had it happen .. but I do hope the kid's ok.

I'd assume they can only return the money if it was in a branch and there was someone around ... never hurts to ask though.

The only time I had left money (and the person behind me told be when I walked away) was when the ATM sequencing changed ... i.e. take the card out and you get money / you take the money and you get your card back.

(knock on wood)

It's a shock, Katanga, to learn you are not perfect. Hope you don't make the same mistake twice. But if you do, I hope I am in line behind you!

BTW, I would give the money to you.

Also, most Chinese in Hong Kong would do the same, so I am surprised the second person didn't grab you.

This happened to me a few weeks ago and while it was not as much money as you lost, it is still infuriating!

I had the experience.. There was a man behind me and he didn't say anything... But what annoyed me was that I walked about 5 feet from the machine, knelt down to put stuff in my bag, get my phone.. I was there for a good 5 minutes and the person who took my money would have had to walk right by me... The large white lady who he couldn't have missed!!!!!

I did ask the bank about procedures and they said that if the money was left in the machine for 60 seconds, it would go back into the ATM. If it did go back in, it would be returned to your account..
They wouldn't do anything if the money was released from the account and taken from the ATM... It was not a fault of theirs... Which does makes sense...

It just sucks when there doesn't seem to be any good natured people around when you make a mistake like that!

Hope your child is alright though!

not sure the process in hk.
in sg technically u can go to police and if they want to pursue, they can check the video camera and trace back the person. especially since they know what time u drew your money. a person that picked up something not belonging to him and not report is prosecutable.

Sorry about the incident with you. What you should do now is contact the bank, they have the video camera above that ATM and all the journal record inside the machine will able to tell who is the one behind you. If the bank cause you any trouble then you could threaten to report to the police. Good luck.

We had the same thing with a deposit machine - 5000 dollars. Made me smarter I guess. same deal - we were standing nearby waiting for friends for quite a while afterwards and no one said anything. This was a year ago - bank was as crap as usual and didn't help - or even seem interested in talking to us.

However, about 2 months ago the reverse happened. guy dashed off and cash came out of the machine. I did my transaction, got a statement and turned it into the bank and explained that the guy before this transaction on the machine records had left the cash in the machine. I waited until they understood and wrote a statement about it. since the machine keeps records in sequence, they should have had no trouble finding the guy. So maybe someone did the same for you? Call the bank - just in case!

You can call the bank to see if somebody returned the money. But, from my experience working in the bank, the bank will say they are not responsible for the loss as you were the one that entered your PIN and withdrawn the money from the ATM. Whatever you do after after the money has been dispensed is out of the banks control and is totally your responsibility.
