Has anyone considered that breathing that first-gasp crappy burnt gas from the un-regulated lighter might be more harmful to the lungs than any natural tobacco product could ever be?

Yeah, which is why I use Colibri gas (perhaps the cleanest commercially available butane) when I do smoke (very rarely now). It's best to keep the direct flame off the tip of your smokeables.
