Question Shipping a bicycle to Europe

Hi,

I'm new to this forum, and I actually don't live in Hong Kong. But this place seemed to be the right place to ask a question like this.

Any way, I bought a bike in HK, now I need it to be shipped back to Europe. If I had been in HK my self I just would have taken it on the plane with me, but I bought it through a friend of mine that lives over there.

It weighs about 18 lbs and I would prefer air-shipping instead of shipping it using the big deep seas with all those giant octopus lurkering below the surface.

Does anyone have a tip for me where I could turn to get help with this?

Thanks in advance for any answers I can get!

Er, I don't think you can do that. You need to talk to someone like UPS or Fedex, but you'll also need to get someone to package it up (probably breaking it down a bit as well to get within size limits). And the cost is likely to be similar to or greater than that of the bike itself... (hundreds of Euros I would guess)

Hi, thanks for your reply. Earlier today I spoke to DHL about shipping to Europe fran HK. They wanted €1500 for the shipping of a simple bike... I found that quite a bit to much.

Anyway, a couple of years ago I went to USA. I bought a bike and took it with me on the plane home. I paid $105 for the extra box I had the bike in. Hmm, maybe I'll have to go to HK and bring it home myself.

This will end up as the most expensive bike in history.

Taking a bike on a plane is usually free for international flights, but it'll count as luggage so if you're flying economy, you usually can't bring much else without a great deal of creative packing.

As you have discovered, air freight for a bike will work out to be very expensive. Bikes are pretty heavy things, but more importantly they are very bulky, which makes transport expensive.

You should be able to have the bike shipped via surface more reasonably- get in touch with one of the relocation companies that are listed on this site. It'll take longer, but it will be cheaper.
