hey everyone,

i have a few question and hopefully you guys can help me out as im once again at a crossroad of my life.

a little about myself first tho, i came to canada as a kid, fluent in english and cantonese, but cannot read or write in chinese. i am soon to graduate from a hospitality and tourism management program at ryerson university. its a b.comm degree majoring in hospitality n tourism basically. i have had many part time jobs but none really relating to my field of studies unless you want to count customer service. (which most job will include 1 way or another)

anyway my questiond r..

1. is there a market for some1 like me in hospitality industry? namely hotels and/or airlines? Im aware many hotels n airlines require fluency in mandarin but what about management trainee programs?

2. what is the salary range for overseas grads for the hotel industry? im aware the universities in hong kong have hospitality programs too now, but also noticed its a program in its adolescent stages and quite young, also, many offer only diplomas n certificates and not degrees.

3. is there room for advancement for someone like me?

4. what hotels are known for hiring overseas grads? if even that is.

and any input of experience or hearsay is welcomed, thanks in advance n i wish u all the best!

Entry level is very competitive in HK. Might want to try Macau.

YOu can start by talking to HR companies that specialise in hospitality. Also check out www.nexc.com. Beter yet try getting into a good hotel through an in campus recruitment or something similiar at your university to gain some experience there before you come to HK.

but what do you guys think generally? say i worked in canada for 2 to 3 years, is there a market for some one overseas who only speak english n cantonese but cannot write chinese? say the 3 yrs was as a front desk agent, would i be hried as same post since im not familiar with the market? or will i be possibly hired as a supervisor or manager?

sorry for allthe question, im just trying to plan ahead. debating if i should start my life in hong kong or continue life in toronto.

Fairmont, bought by the Arabs or so it has been rumored should be hiring as they have opened a new Hotel in China.

Forget knowing how to read or write, if you can speak it and know English, it should be good enough.

I'm graduating from Culinary Management from Ottawa, Canada. But that's not important, there are plenty of jobs out there, just don't look in Hong Kong because if you're looking at entry level jobs, you're going to get **** pay. Plus it's Hong Kong, there's no minimum wage...

You have better luck looking for a job in Canada, work one year or something like that, get a permit and you're done.

But if you're looking for a job that goes untaxed, you do it in Sweden/Europe. New Zealand is hiring for sure, poke your way around, you'll find something.

anyway, i dont speak mandarin so theres no need for me in china lol. plus, hong kogn is where all my families are at so either that or stay in canada. yea.. not quite interested in the minimum-minmum pay hong kong offers unless there are room for advancement... n i dont mean like 5 years before promo to a supervisor.

but thanks for ur advice in new zealand, not bad of an idea actually.. altho i wouldnt make my career there, it would be a great experience to get some work exp. there. thanks!

Well, you can always consider a cruise ship job? Hahaha...

That pays really well and then after a certain amount of time being away from land, you can quit the job and end up elsewhere.

$500-$3000/Week on a Cruise Ship... That's equal to: $3750-$22500 HKD/Week... =) That's sweet... If you can get the 3k numbers to fit in... =)

Well then, I actually lost the job ad on it, it was in the local newspaper the day I read it...

It'll be in my locker somewhere or the ad will come up again.

Hcareers.ca is a great site for Hospitality jobs, one of my coordinators from school recommends that, and another one, I'll post later...

But for Cruise ship jobs, I think Montreal will be hiring in January, I'm scheduled to take a tour on the cruise ship and then decide whether I want a job on the ship or not.
