Concerned about my old HK ID card

Hi all

I’ve a British citizen currently residing in Thailand and I currently hold (the old HK ID card). The last time I went back to HK was October 2004 which means that I’ve gone over the 3 years allowed by 1 month.

I have a flight booked to HK next week to see if I can get the new ID card. Does anyone know whether immigration will give me any problems because my old ID has

1.expired and
2.the last time I went back to HK was over 3 years (by 1 month)

Many thanks to all who can help.

Here is the government website on invalidation of old ID cards http://www.immd.gov.hk/ehtml/hkid_att4.htm

Unconfirmed rumour that they take the old card off you if you try to use it to enter HK.

So shall I use my card or my passport once I arrive in HK?

Don't I still need to change it to my new card once i'm there?

Just to be clear - you have (or had) the right of abode in Hong Kong (i.e. you are a permanent resident)?

I think so. I recall reading that the old ID card is no longer valid.

Best to email enquiry@immd.gov.hk to figure out how to handle the ID card and the 3 year + 1 month issue.
