Can't you just buy one from the supermarket and do it yourself? You can't get any fresher than that. Park'n'shop and Wellcome both sell coconuts (minus the husk).

the grated ones are fresh too. The shop will open the coconut on the spot and grate it while you wait.
anyway, I haven't seen the ones you mention in the Park n Shop nor Wellcome in my area. Is it in the chilled section or vege?

normally stick them in the chilled section. Two types - normal round de-husked nut or hacked into a cylinger shape with a pointy top (so you can cut the point off and stick in a straw).

Try looking for S/SE Asian grocery stores (Indonesian, Malaysian, or even those sell food from the Philippines) to see if any of them would do it. I used to live in Kwun Tong (years ago) and there was an Indonesian/Malaysian grocery store next to the government wet market on Sung Yan Street that do it on the spot from fresh coconut. But because it's so long ago it's likely not there anymore. I think your best bet is still looking for SE gorcery around your area and ask them if they know any place that do it.

No, they don't grate in Ma On Shan. Guess I'll have to look some more. I used to go marketing at Wanchai some 12 years ago and they had a Thai shop there who did it, but I don't see it anymore.

Oh, Pekkerhead, the coconut you speak about is not for grating. It's for drinking the coconut water, and you can then scoop the meat(flesh?) out and eat it. The ones for grating are very old ones, so the flesh is hard and not for eating.

The grated coconut is for extracting of coconut milk for curries and Asian desserts. Some dishes are ok with canned coconut milk but some require fresh coconut milk. Thanks for your help!
