How to install OS on a newly install HDD on a Macbook?

I recently just purchased a 160GB SATA to upgrade the HDD for my Macbook.

So I slotted in the start up cds to install the bundle software that came with the macbook ... it took up roughly 12GB of the hard disk space for starting up whenever I boot up the macbook. According to the Disk Utility ... 148GB is free and 12GB is for start up disk.

After I finished installing the software via the CDs ... I realized, the 18GB out of the 148GB was used to install the platform leaving me with 130GB.

I was able to boot up the macbook without the aid of CDs .... but the 12GB had gone missing!! Now it only state that I have 148GB as the total amount of hard disk space.

Did I do something wrong when I install or will I be able to retrieve that 12GB back?

Thanks.

HDD marketing tactic:

A 160MB disk is actually only 152GB unformatted, then formatting it to Apple's HFS takes another chunk, then you have the operating system, and you are left with 148GB it would seem.

(edit) The journal on a HFS file system takes up ~10% of the disk space, so you are doing pretty good.
