What to buy?

Hi all,
Wonder if there are any particular products which I should buy from home before moving to HK. Friends from Taiwan mentioned children's educational software in English but I thought these are sold everywhere in HK.

Are you moving from Taiwan? If thats the case, you'll find far more stuff available here in HK.

i just had a sensational day walking the streets of central hong kong. and i've got to tell you, there's little you could really miss, in my estimation. of course the folks who've been living here some time can give you the specifics of the few things lacking. but i just wanted to tell you it's a great place, you have much to look forward to, and there's plenty to make up for the few things you can't get! (oh, but i'm told you can't get whole jalapenos in a can and if you're from texas that could be an issue)

I just moved from NYC to HK and I would advise you to SHOP ALL YOU CAN especially if your company is paying for shipping before you come here. Before proud HK readers here jump down my throat, I am not American, did not exactly love living in NYC. I much prefer HK. Im just pointing out that shopping in the US is great value for money, especially on SALE and you get "quality" products at fair prices.

HK on the other hand has cheaper domestic helpers, if you are used to having help like I am and cheaper custom made furniture, cheap VCDs, no shopping tax ....cant really think of much else thats cheaper .........though others may have some ideas.

I was used to stocking up items on sale in the US. You will be apalled by the prices in HK even by NYC standards. HK is the 5th most expensive city in the world. Full of glitzy stores, designer wear and upper upper end stuff............ which depending upon your personal habits may or may not be what you want.

If you are a "regular" person with "regular' needs (i.e not LUXURY needs) like me, the prices take a while getting used to. Yes, almost everything is available here, but at a PRICE.

Be prepared for monthly grocery bills that are about 2-3 times that in NYC.
Small examples....TIDE costs about US$10, cheaper locally made detergents which I used left my clothes shabby and yellow. Pine Nuts are gold, rare to find Easy Off Oven cleaners. I never paid more than US$1.99 for Bounce, it costs about US$4 here.
Deoderants: Apart from the price, I dont like the kind you get here. I prefer the Solid sticks. Im not sure about Fat free items, I have not bought any so cannot comment. Your favourite breakfast Cereal could cost well over US$5 etc etc. Diapers cost about US$15 for what costs US$8-10 in the US. Im not talking about cheap diapers you get here with the sticky tape, Im talking about the ones at par with Huggies Supreme/Pampers Custom Cruisers

Check out prices at:

Or Park N shop Hong Kong, I dont have the website handy

Clothes - for both adults and kids - lots of street market shopping. The stores are expensive. If you are OK picking them up on the streets and in Stanley, you could get decent stuff but prices dont compare with the end of season sales in the US. Yes its all available but you have to look. I prefer the convenience of shopping in US stores at fair prices even if I dont get the best deal.

Electronics - No I dont think HK is cheaper. But well one doesnt have a choice really.
There are no huge stores here and online researching/pricing/shopping is a ZERO here. Well......Im sure you can do some amount of research with a lot of effort. But its not like going to Circuitcity.com and ticking 5 options and selecting "COMPARE"

There is no real return policy in HK (returns winthin 10 days only and only if the package is not opened)

Yes Id pick up kids educational software in the US.

Id pick up Videos/DVDs in the US too, if your kid has some fav shows. MIne loves Barney and is not happy with the local/UK or whichever Barney's voice thats on the VCDs here. VCDs are very cheap here though.

Toys - even though everything in the US is made in China toys on sale are still cheaper in the US.

Cant think of anything else at the moment....

Oh yes ... clothes I forgot to mention....larger size/Long sizes are difficult to get, larger size shoes as well esp in wide width.

Clothes can be tailored in Shenzen and thats pretty reasonable. But all that only after you settle in here.

Baron is an unknown quantity at this point.
Yes,the days of 'everythings cheaper in HK' are gone forever! But, there is more to life in HK than shopping.

Hi ANYC! Welcome to HK. Haven't seen you on GeoBaby in a while! Just wanted to let you know I passed a new American Store yesterday in Central. They're bringing in generic American brands and everything in the store is $12. Its on Wellington Street at the bottom of Aberdeen Street.
