Question about teaching English in HK Hello, I was wondering if jobs opportunities for English teachers in HK are also available to those of Eurasian descent? My father is English, my mother from Hong Kong, and my first language is English. I am not sure whether this would be a disadvantage for me in getting an English teachers job in HK in the future? Please advise me. Thanks

Hi, sorry if i sound a bit pessimist or harsh, but i'm afraid to tell u that ur suspicions are partly right...If u'r white, ur chances of finding a job as an English teacher will rise substantially...I'm not saying it's right, but that's how things are done here. But instead of wondering about whether u hv chances or not, why don't u come to Hk and try? I know some people who aren't caucasian and they are still giving english classes.Just make sure u hv the right teaching certification...

Not a disadvantage at all. If you speak some Cantonese, it might even be an advantage. Your standard of English is pretty good too. Do you have a Bachelor's degree? I currently teach at a primary school in Kowloon and one of the NETs is Chinese, but she was born in the UK.

I'm 100% Chinese and I don't speak it at all. I was able to get a part-time English teaching job easily. I never taught English, never studied it and do not have a degree in Education. I think it comes down to your presentation skills and personality. But don't get me wrong, there will be a few racist people out there that prefer a Caucasian teaching English.
