Best area for a family!

HI - We are probably moving to HOng Kong in the new year and I want to start researching areas for us to live. We have an 18 month old and a 3 year old - who are pretty active little boys! I like the idea of living by the sea as this may give the boys a chance to get outside and be active but we like to go out for dinner and drinks, and don't want these things to be difficult because it is a bit too much of a commute. Equally, we don't want my husbands hours out of the home to be even longer than necessary due to travel. I would really appreciate advice on other areas with access to parks and good preschools and also an honest opinion on how easy the commute from say REpulse bay is and how long it would take? Also if anyone could tell me how mums in HOng kong with 2 small kids fill their days?!

Thanks!

Alternatively to Repulse Bay tons of families seem to also appreciate:

-Discovery Bay or other parts of Lantau Island
-Gold Coast and the area around it
-Clearwater Bay area as well

It's all a question of budget. If you can afford it, go to Repulse Bay. You have a beach, great facilities, shuttle bus and busses that take you into town in twenty minutes, (15mn for Causeway Bay), preschools, supermarkets, doctors, dentists, dry-cleaners, afterschool activities, kindergartens, etc etc. And they're building a mall that will have cinemas, shops, a food court and another supermarket.

are you talking about beach road? i live very close, and besides the odd rumour, i haven't been able to tell exactly what is going in there. i'd be happy if all this were true! i also heard that they were possibly putting a cinema in RB, where the turtle pond is near Wellcome, but can't figure how that would work.

pnicky, will your husband work in Central?

The mall is opening in Spring 2008, and it's going to be called "The Pulse" according to billboards in front of the construction. Some info here : http://www.emp163.com/up/lido_plaza.htm

Wow another mall, just like HK needs another one...More concrete to smother the landscape with, pure genius!

Repulse bay will never be the same again... Nothing on the 70's -80's version... What a shame....

BelAir in Pokfulam is also a great middle ground for those who do not want to be in Repulse Bay or Central.

Couldn't agree more. Soon you'll have to look at the road signs just to work out which part of HK you are standing in as it will all look the same......

Well I live on the south of the island, and I'm real happy that they're building a place with cinemas, shops and restaurants, because I won't have to go into town every time I need something. All of my friends living around here agree that it will make our lives that much easier. It's not a huge ugly building, it'll hardly be noticeable. The only downside is that it'll probably bring more traffic.
There is a rumour that the supermarket will be a Great or a City Super, which is the cherry on the cake.
