I think there are about 60,000 US expats according to the official statistics (US government), but the actual number may be bigger (??).

Many of them have been for a long time, others are relatively new. Many of them don't want to go back to the US.

Perhaps we ask KIA. He knows more .....

Seattlelite in NT

Hi,

Born in Hong Kong, lived in Seattle for the past 20 years and just moved to Hong Kong 6 months ago. Due to the nature of my job I'm out of town a lot (since beginning of June I've been out every month for 2-3 weeks at a time), so it's a little hard to make friends in Hong Kong. Not really into the bar scene either (LKF doesn't really appeal to me), so I'm sorta stuck between a rock and a hard place.

As I'm a HK permanent resident I don't have any plans to move back to the States or to anywhere anytime soon. Hong Kong's an interesting place such that if you compare the expat population in HK Island vs. most residents in New Territories (NT), it's like completely 2 different worlds.

Maybe I sound like an asshole ....... But how do you define an American? One that holds a US passport? Or one that votes for GW? I think you are trying to stereotype people and that may be offensive.

I think people have different definitions for being an American.

Is it proper to be making a distinction?

So in some ways I am an American. In some ways I am not.

audiodesign is an unknown quantity at this point.
I define an American as someone with a USA passport who participates in our democracy no matter where you are in the world and believes in the ideals of our constitution.

Plus we have to pay taxes to Uncle Sam even if we live on the moon. Have to support that 3 billion dollar a week or however much it is kill brown people habit. Welcome to the united snakes.
