Or you could go through a big name garage like Honda, Suzuki, Peugeot and ask them if they have second hands. You'll pay a bit more but you're getting something "certified".

We have found a car we'd like to buy second hand (from a private seller) but want to get it checked over by an independent mechanic. Any suggestions as to whom we could use? Thanks!

Friends of ours took a car to the AA and recommended it very highly.
