Question about my netvigator download speed

I singed up for a 6Mb download speed with PCCW but anything I donwload (programs from apple.com for instance) seems to max out at 125 kb/s.

I have a brand new MacBook so I don't understand what the problem is. I do know it's very frustrating.

I would appreciate any suggestions.

Thanks,

jka

Turn your Now box off. If it's showing green on the front of the box, it'll be using approximately 4.5 mbit of your connection, leaving you with about 1.5 - or 125kbyte/s. If it's red on the front of the box, it's not transferring data, and you'll be able to use your full bandwidth.

You'll rarely get 6Mb/s, if ever. It's a theoretical maximum. It depends on the site you're downloading from and the route the connection takes. I get around 700kB/s for certain torrents from a private tracker, but regular website downloads from a single source? Not likely.

The service is advertised as UP TO.

I am on the 3mb service and get 200kb/s download on the computer side with NOW TV running.

You can easily max out your connection by using multiple download streams. Get a download manager like Internet Download Manager, and instead of getting 125 KB/s, you will be getting 6 times that (or, 6 Mbps).

I appreciate the advice. It was the nowTV hogging all the bandwidth.

Thanks all,

Just one of the reasons NOWTV sucks so much ass, and why it's a waste of money.

First I declare to not be a lover of PCCW. HOWEVER how can it be a waste of money when it comes FREE with your broadband installation?

Of course, nothing is "for free" but how else can I get HBO ( free ) and one other pay channel ( free ) with 3meg Broadband service, in the countryside, where PCCW is the only provider.

You used to be able to get a load of PPV channels on the TV ( real time ) streaming services, but they have all but been killed of now. However, you still have to pay for the BB connection !!
