Whats the general point of view for tattoos in Hk?

I'm the proud owner of 2 tattoos ( a black dragon on my left lower leg and a tribal sun on my right shoulder ), i've never had or experienced any kind of discrimination so far in my original country, but as i'm moving to Hk for work next year i would like to know what is the general point of view that people have about tattoos. I've came to Hk twice and nothing happened, but two days ago one of my Hk friends has told me to cover my tattoos because people here are more conservative. Actually i can cover them, but i've a bit of a problem as i might work in the swimming industry and i'm not imagining myself wearing those full body wet swimming suites

Hi there,

I've been in HK for over two years now, and have a small but 'seeable' tattoo on my ankle. My first employer (Western) told me to cover it completely, which was a right pain. I decided not to mention it to my second employer (Chinese), and I'm still not even sure they've noticed. If they have, they couldn't care less.

I think it's going to depend a lot on your employer. To make things easier for you, I'd say leave them on show until someone important tells you otherwise- play the international card Good luck!

hahaha...yeah...well, it will be a bit difficult to cover them as a swimming teacher, at least the one in the leg...

umm....the dragon might be a bit of an issue. It's an extremely popular tattoo among certain triads in Hong Kong...and extremely unpopular among certain other triads.

But if you don't look like a local, it should be fine.

You're going to see some pretty large tattoos of dragons and goddesses on some of the local guys here. Your tats might be an issue for some people though, especially if you're teaching kids.

I go to Physical Gym, which has the strangest policy that if you have tattoo, it must be kept covered while in the facility!!!

Yeah, I hear you. See how it goes. Most of the guys I see with intricate and openly visible full torso tats are in construction or delivering goods. I actually really like the Chinese style tats. Might have to get one at some point to represent my birthplace.

Sorry to disappoint you but mine are not that big, maybe the biggest on my leg is around 5 inches length , i was suggested to cover it with a neoprene band around it ( the one in the leg ), the other i could cover it with those special swimming shirts...ahhhhh, so troublesome!
