Hello,

Does anyone know where at Hong Kong side I can get discounted train tickets to travel around Japan? I understand buying train tickets in Japan is much more expensive than buying it ahead overseas, e.g. HK.

Any tips welcome!

Not sure how extensive you are planning to use the train, but we bought the Japan Rail Pass. It is only for foreigners, and you have to buy it outside Japan (avaiable at many travel agents in HK).
For us, it was absolutely worth it.

Depends where you are going, there are different types of rail passes that cover different regions of Japan (JAPAN RAIL PASS (cover all regions), JR EAST PASS, HOKKAIDO RAIL PASS, JR WEST RAIL PASS and JR KYUSHU RAIL PASS.
If you are going to Osaka, Kyoto, Nara and Nagoya, I would recomend buying the Kintetsu Rail Pass as it's cheap compare to JR pass and cover 2 regions. (only 3500 yen for 5 days unlimited travel, compare with JR west pass which is 2000 yen per day and the area you can use is much smaller)
