"starring" culture in HK

Hi, just want to share some of my experience when I was in HK several months ago. I am from Manchester, UK. I vistied HK a few months ago to try to look for a job as my girlfriend is living there.

I found out that HK ppl like to "look" at you a lot, like, they actually look at you for a few seconds until you look back at them. Especially when I went out with my girlfriend (she is chinese), quite a lot of them "look" at us as if they want to ask why the chinese girl is hanging with a white guy. Well, it doesn't always happen, it depends which districts you are in, e.g. it seems fine when we are in Causeway way and Central, but it gets worst when we are in Shatin and Mongkok.

I just wonder am I too sensitive or have you guys experienced that before ?

Mix couples don't get stared at in some parts of England? Must be utopian, the land that you've arrived from.

Just learn to deal with it and ignore the stares ... not much you can do about changing people's curiosity levels in *any* country.

there is safety in numbers.

You should perhaps consider membership in The Hong Kong Association of Gwailos Married to Southeast Asian Women of Humble Origins.

The starring sensation tends to be an experience that newbies are initially sensitive to, after a year or so of living here, you don't even notice it happening, it certainly helps if you are a married "mixed" couple ie wearing wedding rings etc. Loads of ham sup farn gwei's out there, locals will tend to size you up, to see which one you are,via observational interpretation..

In my experience, its harmless curiosity, sometimes envy, or wonder as to how you got together.. There's a large percentage of single unmarried ( lonely ) people living in HK, especially among the local population, so, seeing any couple interact out in public, not just a mixed one, will get some idle stares...

Nothing to get bent out of shape about... Wait till you go accross the border lol, then you will know what blatant starring is all about. HK is very mild in this regard...
