Rather than wait for HKForNow's response .. I'd haul my rear end to the consulate and get the passport renewed - you're technically an illegal alien right now. Just be glad you're not a brown skinned person living in the US - you'd be deported and banned for reentering, for life, for overstaying.

Ten days to get a US passport renewal. Just did it a few weeks ago.
HK visa seems to be just a matter of the correct paperwork as they should have all the records from the previous application. I have to do this in the next couple of weeks also.

I searched for the answer with the Chinese Embassy in the US, & it seems for $30 USD you can. Please see link.

Redwriter, I'm with KIA on this one. Go to the US embassy ASAP renew passport & get yourself back into legal status. Link on how to renew passport. Good Luck.

That's assuming all Chinese embassies/consulates play by the same rules. I wish the one in HK had a web site.
Anyway, I am headed down there today and we'll just see what happens. Adventures in HK/China continue.

And just to end this thread--I got a 6 monther, same day. HKD1030. I showed up around 9:40 (got lost), my number was called at 11:00 and I had to go back and pick up after 3:30. They seem to average about 25 people per hour (2 open windows). And their phione recording lists a website, but we couldn't quite catch the whole thing before having to leave. And they are closed from noon-2 pm. So, if you pull number 80 at 10:00, you might not see the window until after 2:00.

Thanks for the help, HKfornow. I contacted the US Embassy and they said there was no problem. Took about ten days to get it taken care of. Next I will apply for a HK SAR passport.

Update

I went to re-apply the visa for myself and my son, and again requested for the 1 year visa, and I was told the usual "visa application is case by case basis, and each time is different, but you can try for it". Went and picked it up on Friday, and luckily both of us got 1-year visas!!

They have new application forms that they were passing out while you queue. Noticed a sign mentioned their website. Wish I knew of this site before!!! But it never came up in my previous google. Anyway, this should answer most of our previous questions!
