Go to the ground floor of Chungking Mansions. There are many shops selling only calling cards. They will let you know which card is the cheapest one for India, since every card has specific countries it is cheap for. You may want to get a card that you can register with your phone number so that you don't have to enter the pin every time.

Unless you like the idea of going there every now and then just to buy your calling cards, I'd recommend dialling direct.

Try contacting New World Telecom for their IDD 009 service, I know they have good rates to call India occasionally.

There are others like 1611 (www.asiatel.com.hk)

For PC to PC calling, try Skype, or even Yahoo/MSN Messengers.

Be careful with some of these packages though. For example, HGC rounds all calls up to the nearest minute, which will change your average cost/minute quite dramatically if you make lots of short calls. And if you don't actually use all of your 1000 minutes you still have to pay HK$600.

Other IDD services are available which charge simply by the second for whatever you use. The headline rate may look less attractive, but when you apply your actual calling pattern then the real rate you end up paying on the promo packages can often be worse than the simple per-minute tariffs.

Skype basically allows you to use your internet connection as a phone line.

Things you need:
1. Computer with Internet connection and the Skype software installed (http://www.skype.com) and account created (free)

2. A pair of headphones/speakers and Mic

3. You need to 'charge' up your Skype account - much like IDD Cards - and use it to dial to a phone number or another skype account.

For dialling to phone numbers, the rates vary from country to country - detailed information is available on skype's website. For talking with other skype accounts - like friends on Yahoo/MSN - it is absolutely free. Catch is however - that they need to be online as well at that time and connected on Skype with an account.

I currently use IDD 0080 / 1511 (more reliable in connections, but expensive than 0080) and Skype.

I have been using Real Calling card to call india. This gives 90 mins by paying 40 HKD and other charges are extra e.g. if you are calling from your mobile etc. etc.

Any computer store will sell you one - basic ones start at about HK$25.
