Canadian Transit visa for CX888 to JFK?

Can anyone who has travelled recently on CX888 to JFK with the stop in Vancouver and who would need a visa to enter or transit Canada confirm whether they needed such a visa to take this flight?

(CX has given me an answer, but I just want to double check to be sure since it could wreck complicated holiday plans if the agent I spoke to got it wrong.)

Thanks in advance for sharing any recent first-hand experience.

as far as i know, you'll need to obtain a canadian visa prior to boarding the flight. you'll need to clear canadian immigration before boarding a us bound flight.

Just to clarify, CX888 stops in Vancouver, and passengers continuing on the same plane to New York are required to say in a "holding pen" at the gate while the plane is cleaned / refuelled. You do not go through any immigration facilities at Vancouver. I have done this many times with a passport that doesn't require a visa for Canada (or the US), but now I need to know for my fiancee, who does.

So, to save everyone's time, if you haven't actually travelled on CX888 to JFK with a passport that would require a Canadian visa (or with someone who did) then please don't respond to this thread with uninformed guesses.

PDLM : Best to get the transit visa -- I have been prevented from boarding a flight in the US to HK via Vancouver by the ticketing agent, who looked at the passport regulations while checking me in and figured I needed a transit Visa.

Unfortunately this was on a Saturday flight, so I had to stay back and get a visa on Monday. Was interrogated by the Candadian Embassy on how I was able to transit from HK in the first place .. they ran a fair few checks -- called my employers, called the hotel etc to verify that I had landed when I claimed I had and was not a risk.

They ended up giving me a 1 day visa to transit through Vancouver.

FYI - It was CX .. not sure what the number was, but pretty much the same flight. The agent claimed I was technically disembarking on Canadian soil so I needed a visa. The problem with all of this was, the HK side (travel agent and CX) had not told me about this.

So, the problem is not only silly govt folks .. but also dealing with ticketing agents. God forbid these days if you argue with them ... you're going to get strip searched and harassed by security -- thanks to the magic they can do.

Yes, thanks, I'd seen that, but that seems to refer to, for example, flying into Vancouver then driving immediately to Seattle, where clearly you need to go through Canadian Immigration. With CX888 you just get put in a holding pen at the gate and don't have any contact with any Canadian authorities.

I have emailed the Canadian consulate, but no response yet.

Cathay's answer over the phone, by the way, is that a visa is not required.

For completeness, I have the answer from the Canadian Consulate; since I can't find it anywhere online here it is:

Transit Without Visa Program for Nationals of Indonesia, Philippines, Taiwan and Thailand

Citizenship and Immigration Canada, in co-operation with the Vancouver International Airport Authority and various domestic and foreign air carries, has introduced a pilot Transit Without Visa program at Vancouver International Airport (VIA) to reduce the inconvenience and cost of travel through Canada.

Effective June 28, 2002 , nationals of Indonesia, Philippines, Taiwan and Thailand, subject to certain conditions, are allowed to transit VIA to and from the United States without the need to obtain a Canadian temporary resident visa.

Eligibility Requirements for Travellers

Nationals of Indonesia, Philippines, Taiwan and Thailand transiting Canada at VIA to the United States must have in their possession a valid and subsisting U.S. visa to enter the United States and must:
  • be ticketed or arrive on a carrier that has access to U.S. intransit preclearance inspection without first having to be examined by a Canadian immigration officer; or,
  • arrive and leave Canada on a flight that will be cleared by U.S. inspection agencies upon arrival in the United States.
Nationals of Indonesia, Philippines, Taiwan and Thailand transiting Canada from the United States must:
  • at the time of their arrival in the U.S. , have had in their possession a valid U.S. visa to enter the United States ( persons allowed entry to the U.S. under the U.S. TRWOV or Visa Waiver programs are not eligible for this program );
  • have been lawfully admitted to the U.S. and have hot overstayed the period of time they were authorized to remain in the United States;
  • not be deported or otherwise removed from the United States unless, having been refused admission to the U.S. after transiting Canada on a flight that was not cleared by U.S. preclearance inspectors at VIA, are removed from the U.S. within seven days of their arrival; and,
  • arrive at VIA on a flight directly from the United States and be destined to a third country to which they are admissible.
Eligible person must have outbound air transportation booked for departure from VIA within 24 hours of arrival in Canada . TWOV passengers may be boarded on any outbound flight from VIA regardless of whether or not the carrier is a signatory to the TWOV program.

The following transportation companies are eligible to carry TWOV passengers to Canada:

Air Canada
Alaska Airlines
American Airlines
Cathay Pacific Airways
China Airlines
Philippines Airlines

To determine whether your proposed flights meet the above requirement, we recommend you contact your airline.

I'd carry a copy of that .. just incase the British Airways clowns that handle the check in at JKF are not aware of this program.

I was planning to - although we're only doing HKG-JFK via YVR. It's a round-the-world ticket so coming back the other way via SFO, London & Paris
