Hi all, I have been reading these forums and seen some very useful information. I would like some advice. I am a westerner from the US (Boston) getting ready to relocate to HK in January. I work for a Chinese company and we are about to expand our office in Hong Kong and I was asked to move. I have lived in China for 3 years so I am not a stranger to Asia. This move looks like a long term/permanent move. I am single so will not be relocating with family.

Any suggestions on the best place pros/cons of areas in Hong Kong you all suggest?

You'll have to give a lot more info than this - married? kids? where will you be working? budget? Suggest you also look at the many other similar threads.

I'm not sure about Hull, but in Hong Kong single means no wife and no kids...............

As well as your budget, a lot also depends on your social and travel needs. If you want to go clubbing and be out late then a more central location would suit. If you're happy with a few drinks after work and heading out to the fresher air, then the New Territories, Lantau or Lamma would be worth looking at.
Same with travel- if you want a quicker taxi ride to work (I'm presuming your office is Central/Wanchai area) or are happy to take a bus (Stanley or Southside) or MTR (Sai Kung/Tai Po etc) or ferry (BD, Lantau, Lamma).

Oops, apologies. The rain has obviously rotted my few remaining brain cells. Trousers almost dried out from the walk to work this morning, just in time to get soaking wet walking home at lunchtime.

Honestly, I think for westerners HK is really the best of both worlds, close enough to china but enough modern / western amenities / comforts of home to make you not as homesick. It's a great place for westerners to 'get their feet wet' :-)

Steve! I'm from Mass as well. But am in western mass.. about 5 mins from Springfield to be exact.

I'm so jealous about you moving!!

I highly suggest Discovery Bay. That's where I used to live.. it's gorgeous there.. just a ferry ride away from HK island. I love it! As does my bf! We're hoping to potentially move to HK in the future .. long as he can land himself a job in his field of works.

Unless, of course, the typhoon closes the ferry and buses aren't allowed across bridges.

Thanks for all the input. I am going out in a few weeks to help shop for office space with some co-workers in Shenzhen, so I think it is a unique opportunity to help decide the office location and decide where I want to live. I am not into clubs and don't drink, not saying I don't go to bars, but location to night life is not that important to me. I hope I can meet some interesting people and also be involved with the local community in Hong Kong.

Kennedy Town is a great place to live. It's a bit quieter than other parts of Hong Kong, and it's easy to get to Central with the transit system here. The rent is very decent...and although I hated it at first (as I didn't like ANYTHING about Hong Kong initially), I have grown to love it!!
