Kowloon or mid-levels???

I'm moving to HK this weekend & trying to figure out where to live for my 3-year assignment (I'll be working on the Kowloon side)...

I'd been thinking about mid-levels (based on a bunch of postings I've been reading on this site- but, now a lot of people @ work are saying that I should really live in Kowloon, because the commute to & from mid-levels each day will be too brutal.

Any thoughts? My sense was that for expats, mid-levels & central made more sense.

I'm confused...

Not always. Plenty of folks who live and work AND are pretty happy with the options in Kowloon.

Where abouts are you going to be working in Kowloon?

I do the commute (mid-lvls to Mongkok) and I think it depends on what you used to. 'Brutal' can be relative I guess. My 45 min commute here might be high for HK standards but coming from NYC, it isn't so bad.

I think these might be considered some of the more "expat-friendly" areas in Kowloon : Olympic City, Homantin, Laguna Verde (Whampoa). I'm sure there are tons more, thats just off the top of my head.

We used to live in Homantin and work in HK-side; although the commute wasn't as bad as to be considered "brutal", we've since moved to HK-side and don't miss it at all, either.

It depends whether you drive or not, and the place you work. If you live Mid-level and not going to drive, you might have to take a bus/minibus/taxi/walk/etc to the downtown (in fact almost everywhere in HK is donwtown), then MTR/bus/taxi/ferry to the place you work. You have to consider the traffic time, the peak hours, etc. And I think you'd better find out available routes and transport tools between office & home before you decide.
