A good amount of the pollution is particulate and volatile organics... so yes, masks do help.

P100/P99 masks could eliminate atleast the particulate elements of the pollution...

yes, but those only work effectively, if fitted properly; when I started every job I have had in a hospital, they did a fit test to make sure you have no leaks. also, from what i recall, after about 15 minutes the humidity from your breath reduces effectiveness as well, but I will have to look that up, as it's only a vague memory.

edit: i guess according to the WHO they are good for 6-8 hours of use as long as you don't touch them or they aren't saturated.

I occasionally use Respo masks. Achieving a good seal is very easy- you can immediately tell when airflow comes in from poor seal.

They are not adversely affected by humidity over short periods (e.g. an hour) of time.
