The Observatory says it may issue the number three strong wind signal this afternoon as severe tropical storm Pabuk moves closer to Hong Kong. The storm is east of the territory, and heading west towards Guangdong at about 30 kilometres an hour. A senior scientific officer, Mok Hing-yim, said the weather will deteriorate later in the day

These numbers (typhoon "3") are based on proximity to HK, right?
As opposed to the US 1 through 5 strength ratings.

it has something to do with the wind speed - the higher the number the stronger the wind with signal 10 the wind speed is hurricane force wind

....I simply don't have the time to take a day off work..tight deadline to meet...so hoping that it's less than 8.

Well I've been stuck up in GD for a few day and am hoping to get back to HK this evening so personally I do not want it to get worse. Got a wife and baby at home I want to see.
