Right of Abode

I am interested in buying a propoerty in HK and spending regular periods of time there, but not working in HK. Should I get some kind of Right of Abode status/ID card or rely on visitor status (I am a UK citizen)? I am looking at property below the 6.5 million investment range.

Well.. It seems you know about Investment visa but not really looking for it. So, in that case buying a property and spending time in HK on visitor visa should not be a problem as long as you get it. However, its not guaranteed forever. So, think twice bofore making such move or else, if possible, increase your budget and go for investment visa...

For the time being you are allowed 6 months per stay on a visitor visa, so I don't think you'll have a problem with regular visits, although Immigration might take a second look if you end up spending the majority of your time in HK.

Thank you for that. And I suppose what I should have asked is - is it actually legal for foreigners to buy property in HK?

Yes of course. Remember though that no property in HK is freehold - only leasehold.
