They finally cracked the iPhone? Apparently some Chinese dude cracked it, but I tried visiting the website that's shown on this video but wasn't able to connect to it. http://linhoo.linhoo.org/podcast/upload/hd/iphone16.m4v

I just found the instructions but it's in simplified Chinese. I googled that guy's name "huczi" and found it, I'm not sure if I'm allowed to post the link though because it's to another forum.

The video shows him dialing a local China number and the iPhone rings .. and then shows him dialing a local number from the iPhone and his other phone rings and shows a local calling number on the other phone.

Great, there's an English version of the instructions out already on hacktheiphone.com. Now I can get someone to send me an iPhone from the States.

I get the impression that's simply copying what has already been achieved last month. It appears by someone in Oz, outgoing calls only: http://www.engadgetmobile.com/2007/0...im-hack-video/ Engadget followed up with a report of the instructions being published, requiring special SIM programming equipment: http://www.engadget.com/2007/08/06/s...tandt-kind-of/ Last edited by MrMoo; 07-08-2007 at 01:29 PM.

I have a smart card read writer, my guess is it will serve to modify the SDK and data on the sim. If anyone with an iPhone wants to have a stab, let me know.

All becomes clear now about why the clever people haven't cracked it but the 3rd world has ( maybe Oz is 2nd world ! ) -- maybe. If the fix is being made to the sim then you are interfering with the carriers property and depriving them of revenue. US ( AT&T ) side lawyers will be lining up the tanks !!! You will not be making a CLEAN sim you will be ammending an already written program. If the fix is produced in the hardware its a much harder case to prove. After all when you buy an Iphone it becomes your property by way of a contract of sale, not a lease from Apple tied to a contract you sign at the till. It can be claimed easily that you don't buy a sim card. Its a key that allows you to operate a service. You can use any phone to make a call on AT&T, but must use the appropriate sim. Any interferance with the key is forgery in the old sense. The clever people will fix it on the phone side and be clear of any legal charge. After all, the phone is theirs to do with as they wish and by publishing an opinion on a hack could it be seen they where encouraging something , that maybe in a more liberal area of commerce law ( EEC ) would not stand up under the scruitiny of fair trading law? I can't wait to see the legal details of the UK ( O2? ) deal and how long , if similar to the US, it remains unchallenged.

Well now its cracked for sending & receiving, albeit a non-trivial process that will improve with time. Is it worth a car and three locked iphones though? http://www.engadget.com/2007/08/27/n...nd-a-sports-c/
