Urgent Advice Needed on dog!

Hello,
I have to head back to Australia in the next month for good - rushed and unplanned due to a personal emergency and I need to send my 10 month old Bichon frise back with me.
Does anyone have any experience with this sort of thing? I'm a little lost.

I have spoken to quarantine in Australia and they say that my dog needs to do a rabies and blood test 180 days prior to arrival otherwise they need to quanrintine him for 6 months!

I am trying to decide whether to keep him in a Hong Kong doggy hotel for 5-6 months or whether to quanrtine him in Australia. The money is the same but my dog's welfare is first priority. I'm worried about the level of care provided on each end.

Can anyone offer any advice or insight from personal experience?

Thank you very much!

If Carang can't help, try these guys -

Instead of a pet hotel, you might want to consider having your pooch stay with someone at their place in HK for the requisite period of time. If you don't know anyone, try calling some of the vets on the island. They often can recommend pet sitters. My friend used her vet to find someone to watch her shiz tsu for 3 months this summer.

Private Pet sitting

As far as quarantine goes, you DON'T want to do that, imho! Any dog who has known the comforts of home and the personal love of people suffers terribly in a kennel quarantine situation. Additionally, 6 months in a cage means loss of house-training (

Though we are in the USA, we ourselves and many friends do private Bichon-sitting throughout the year. Some are short term, some long. many Bichonlovers around the world do the same (but remember ALL offers need to be checked out carefully, complete with homecheck and references.)

Our world-wide Bichon group may include someone competent from Hong Kong willing to sit for your beloved bichon puppy, Not sure of course, would have to post your need.

If you haven't found a private home arrangement, let me know and I'll post to our Bichon group.

Vet

Hello,

Do you happened to have a customary vet in HK? If you are a good customer, they do get creative.

For the quarantine, I agree if everyone else. I send my uncle there an African Grey not knowing any better. The bird was so depressed that he lasted less than a year after that. Not a good place to be.

If you do decide to go with the Pet Sitter Option, which is probably the most appropriate one, I strongly would recommand that you come back to HK and visit every so often. 6 month is a long time to be separated and can have some serious impact on your future relationship, especially with bichons. They are known to be a one owner dog and can make themself sick if they feel that their owner is not there (regardless of whatever activities the center may have for them.)

I hope that helped. Good luck

Hoffrey,

Carang is a registered member on this site. If you go to Private Messages on the left hand side of this website... you can send her a private message (PM).

Alternatively, the business they have DB Dog Dayz has a website : http://www.dbdogdayz.com/ and you can contact them through there.

Hope you get your little one sorted out.

Hi There,
The following link will give you specific info on getting your pet from HK to Australia.
Quarantine is only 30 days when they reach Oz and if you are near the vicinity of the compound you can visit them twice a week. I have heard that the care and facilities are really quite good.
Good luck

If you actually read the documents at the link you gave you will see that the 30 days is an absolute minimum if a lot of preconditions have been met in the months prior to the animal reaching Australia. Since in this case the move is at very short notice and these conditions are not met the documents at the site you linked to do agree with the OP that the quarantine would be 6 months if the dog were imported to Australia now.

Hi Guys,
Thank you so much for taking the time to reply to me. The wife is quite stressed as she is worried about the impact of a long term qurantinne environment. We went on holidays for a week once and we left him at a Doggy Hotel, it took him days to be back to his playful self again.

PLDM is right, if we leave this month then our pup will have to stayin qurantine for 5-6 months. We are weighing the option of Quanratine where at least we are in the same city and can visit him a few times a week to visit and groom him. However we've had a good friend offer to take care of him for 5 months so we will have all the attention he needs and will only need to spend 30 days in Qurantine

Thank you all for your thoughtfulness and time!

Stay happy and stay healthy
Regards
Hoffrey
