ok, first apologies the OP, for the gender mistake. In view of that,

1) the yelling into his ear is still applicable.
2) use your sneakers instead of heels...

wsuperfun, to answer your question, YES, i do think that the legs-crisscrossed-on-bench is inappropriate, but you missed the point, the OP was referring to what he thought was discriminatory behavior towards him, necessitating that sort of response. Not to excuse him of the fact that he was being impolite, but to warrant such an aggressive reaction from the security guard was IMO, uncalled for.

R A C I S T

racist - A statement of surrender during an argument. When two people or disputants are engaged in an acrimonious debate, the side that first says “Racist!” has conceded defeat. Synonymous with saying “Resign” during a chess game, or “Uncle” during a schoolyard fight. Originally, the term was meant to indicate that one side was accusing the other of being racist, but once it was noticed that people only resorted to this tactic when all other arguments had been exhausted, it acquired its new meaning of “indicating one’s own concession of defeat.”

Have you observed how people with a darker skin color are treated around here? And I'm also getting the impression that you're either a Caucasian or a CBC...

Racism exist everywhere. What Ken said was merely stating that HK is not a racist enough place that people are going physically harm people due to different race whilst some places in the world might be different.

Racism of course exist in every corner in HK. They are classist, agist and ....too.

I'm a local here but I've lived in NewZealand all my life and let me tell u that there is definetly racism here. Yes, some people here are all about money, some of my coworkers just talk to me about stocks and nothing else (boring).

Personally I dont think Hong Kong people are very accepting of different cultures, it's very rare that when I hang out of a bunch of friends that there will be anyone but chinese there.

As for that guy in the lobby, he seems to be a very non-educated person, someone should go and tell him off.

Well, I've had my fair share of racism, even in New Zealand so I know how it feels. Dont let it get u down, otherwise they win.

When I first got here (a little over a year ago) I really thought all the locals were racists and one of the rudest (mannerless) people on the Earth. Mostly the older generation, though. Now I realize the truth about "it's all about money" here. If they think you are rich you would be treated on a totally different level. And they do judge by clothes & accessories a lot. So, yes racial/gender discrimination does exist but now I would call it "material" discrimination.

Oh, and one more thing I learnt -- local people are not rude, they are "ambitious". So get over it .

regarding your situation, i think many times the security guys don't really bother with caucasians (situation with the tourists sitting on the floor etc) because they don't wanna deal with switching to speaking english... maybe their english isn't that good. But when they saw you cross legged, they probably thought you're asian and can understand chinese...? Not making excuses but honestly, I think most security people are just bored and need to 'do something'... hell i've been yelled at at parks for stepping on the grass and for playing badminton outside ("You need to book a room!") - and i'm chinese... these guys have nothing better to do. if they saw a caucasian do the same thing, they're probably lazy to try to lecture them in english...

uhhh... maybe because you're basically in china...? hence lots of chinese people...? i think sometimes those of us who've lived overseas expect the same level of 'mix' / 'diversity' here and just aren't used to seeing so many chinese people all at once... it's like me going to Ohio and seeing a bunch of caucasians hanging out at starbucks, i won't call that racist... that's just their community.
