Let,s face it, racism exist (everywhere) and under many different form...when one encounters it, once feel upset (normal feeling) but ppl should just move on...
There is no real solution and the best way is to just ignore those morons and move on with your life....

The other guys were sitting on the floor. That has no impact on anyone else. Am I misunderstanding something?
(I'm not saying there isn't racism against Filipinos, amongst others, here - my fiancee is Filipina so I know about that. But your story is not a good example.)

| | | The motto was infact, " When in Rome, do as Romans do".
People who suffer at the hands of racism, generally bring it upon themselves, because they see themselves as a victim... It's an attitude problem and a sign of weakness.
My suggestion, concentrate on what you are doing, set a good example for others to admire, and you will never be a "victim" of racism, no matter where you are from.
One of my friends is as black as the ace of spades, an African American, married to a Macau Portugese national here in Hong Kong, running a very successful music industry management firm.
He's a lovely guy, a natural communicator and I don't think he has ever complained about racism during his decade and a half living in HK.....

the other point, indeed it went like a joke, a kind of which implies a hidden rebellion due to the guy's uncomfortable feeling being a local HK serving someone allegedly belongs to the race lower than him...im in doubt that he represents the thinking of the majority among local HK though. I'm here ready to make friends too, anyway. | On the first point. There is no problem in the culture and I am suprised you don't realise it, that sitting on a floor is not a problem. It has nothing to do with colour.
You had your " dirty shoes " in and unacceptable ( cultural ) place.
It seems a little, from your tone , as if you are a little programmed to be treated in a racist way. This is an observation and not a judgement. After all I am a white Anglo Saxon so have no experiance of intense racist behaviour towards myself. I apologise if I am being insensitive, , even in a small way.
As for the other incident . Comment can only be made on the words put down by you. I probably might have a similar feeling to you if in the same situation and as a knee jerk reaction. I still think it was humour misplaced in this incident and for how you have described it.
You seem an intelligent and gifted individual and I am sure you can rise above it all. Your true friends will be your enjoyment of HK.

If in Rome, do as the Romans do
| Would that mean spitting around, smell like a fish (particularly breath), picking in the nose, clearing my throat with the most disgusting sound possible etc. etc.? | |

| | Yeah all of the above, don't forget to raise your talking voice to about 125dba sound pressure, and you would be a fully fledged local.. .
I am convinced that the average Hong Konger suffers from industrial deafness, especially those who choose to live in the worlds most populated quadrants, Causeway bay and Mong Kok. I'd be pretty close to saying they would also be the worlds noisiest neighbourhoods to endure 24/7, unlike what I was previously accustomed to, in some other cities around the world, where people work in the city, and live in suburbs to get a break from it all....
The racism and descriminatory expression that is the topic of this discusson, is a bit like how a 5 year old child explains exactly what it see's, there is no pc tact built into the social fabric, a spade is certainly a spade in good ol Hong Kong..
