WTF does this mean??

Seen when trawling news.com in an article about MS driving forward its ( at present ) loss making divisions.

Quote
" Microsoft is building a platform for that new computing paradigm with Chief Software Architect Ray Ozzie "driving the revolutionary new platform that is service centric," Gates said. "

Sorry - over my head.
Sounds like something Kim Jong Il might say.

Basically they are aiming at the "thin client" model - making all the applications that you want to use reside on a central network controlled by Big Brother (aka Microsoft, under the auspices of the US Government). Users will have fairly dumb terminals which they use to do everything in this networked world. The idea is that the concept of a standalone computer storing applications and data ceases to exist; all applications & data reside on central Microsoft-controlled servers. This of course makes it easier for Big Brother to have total control over our lives. Presumably in the case of any resistance to this the US (i.e. World) Government will simply mention "al-Qaeda" and the populace will go down on its knees and thank the World Government for doing all these things to protect them.

Service Centric apps don't have to reside on public servers. Majority of the SOA (service oriented architecture) is focused on the enterprise platforms allowing access to proprietary systems.

And he'd have quite fancied giving Bill a bloody nose at the time. Just one name in a long list of people who have tried to cut off the cash-cow that is Windows...

Its more about creating a reliable regular income from subscriptions rather than one off payments. Software vendors are seeing that users have very little reason to upgrade from say Office 97 to Office XP, Office 2003, or Office 2007.

Buying a Dell computer you only pay US$50 for Vista Basic ($99 regular OEM, $199 retail) to $149/$299 for Vista Business, compare that with Red Hat Enterprise Linux Desktop at $80/mo or SuSe for $50/mo. Windows XP has been out for six years already so you would be paying more as well as more frequently.
