Have been trying to pay my bill via the ATM and run into trouble as they ask for a 2 digit number to indicate 'bill type'

any one know?

From HSBC's online bill payment service you have two choices 01 for monthly account and 02 to top-up prepaid cards.

I must try this new fangled 'internet banking' one day.
Right now I will be grateful if the hole in the wall understands 01 means what you say it means and moves the coins to the appropriate drawer
