How to buy a stock on the India exchange?

Hello,

Does HSBC / other provide access to buying equities in India (National Stock Exchange / Bombay)?

And yes... I know that -most- stocks trading in India are likely overvalued (or at least will have diminishing returns in the medium term). I'm looking at a single company I believe to be undervalued (long run).

Thanks

I believe that it is very hard for foreigners to own stocks in India. Even the tracker funds and other vehicles don't actually own the stocks directly. As far as I know, the only vehicles that HSBC HK offers for investing in India are various managed funds (their own, JF's and others) plus access to the Sensex ETF (stock code #2836).
