Sai Kung

Hi

I'm going to Sai Kung this weekend I don't think hiking is going to be a good idea due to the heat - SO can I wake board there and can yo get a boat/saipan to the best beaches directly from the ferry boat terminal?

Thanks

Rachel

Yes to all questions.

Wakeboarding - few places that do it but don't personally have the contacts.
Would try near the old beach hotel first if you don't find anything before you get here.

Can get boats to outlying islands (Hap Mun beach etc)from anywhere near the ferry pier (usually get a sampan from just in front of the seafood restaurants).

Can also get an hour trip on the boat w/o actually landing.
Can get boat to the Jockey Club Golf course separately has restaurants and other things as well as the golf part.

for wake boarding, you could always hop on the 94 or 96 and head out to wong shek (takes half an hour), the sports centre there maybe able to help (but phone them first, not sure if it members only?).

Not sure where Hap Mun is, but you can certainly get on a boat and head out to Pak Lap, Sharp Island or even Tai Long wan (bit further round the coast).

or just grab a taxi, make sure you get the guy's mobile number and get him to drive you there instead - I am pretty sure you can drive as far round as East Dam - Tai Long Wan isn't too far from there (neither is Pak Lap and Pak Lap Tsai). Then you can phone him to pick you up later.

Sharp island has some really nice coral close to shore (in about 3 meteres of water) so you could always go for a snorkel.

Wouldn't go for Tai Long Wan if your intention is to avoid hiking - I think it's a 2hr hike from the road to the beach.

Lovely when you get there though.

If happy going out that bit further then as well as Wong Shek, can also visit Hoi Ha which is a marine park (where the sharks have been spotted recently though). Not much of a beach but good snorkelling there as well.

Hap Mun is probably the closest beach to Sai Kung town but as a result it can get very busy at the weekends.

Other sl closer beach that is recommended by many up here is Trio which you can access from Pak Sha Wan by sampan.

not if you get a taxi to East Dam first.

thanks

Thank you for your tips - will be driving so how far is the hike then?

With a mixed group and some oldies who can;t face a long hike in this extreme heat.

To be honest with some oldies on tow, Tai Long wan will be Tai 'Too Long to get to' Wan. How long depends on how fast they can walk, me half an hour, them, who knows? Not worth the risk in the heat. If you want to go there take a boat. It's lovely coastline.

By the way, you won't be allowed to drive to Wong Shek as it is within the country park, only permit holders and taxis/buses can go in. Not sure about East Dam and surrounds for private cars, but, seeing as that also lies within the park boundaries you may have to leave the car in Sai Kung.

I forgot to mention there is a carpark at the park entrance on the way to Wong shek should you decide to go there.

where did you go to in the end?

I ended up going to Tai Long wan myself, but on a dive boat (still took an hour by boat from Sai Kung Pier). Over the course of the morning about 15 to 20 large motor cruisers and junks came into the bay, and parked up (sorry moored). Then out came the jet skis and speedboats. So much for Tai Long Wan being hard to get to and secluded: mind you, the weather was great and it was Sunday.
