Salaries

In your experience, do most expats get paid in HKD or their local currency (in my case USD).

In my case.....both. I say what amount I want in HKD deposited into a local account, the rest goes into the US based account in USD.

Not sure if that's the standard practice, but I would assume it is for many expats who are here on a company package.

What Climber07 says is pretty typical for the "full expat" package. What is best depends on your individual circumstances: how long you plan to stay here, what proportion of your money you're putting away for savings, whether you have to pay your tax (in each country if American) or your employer, and so on...

Currency split deposited in to two different account such as a HK based HSBC US$ account and a HK based HSBC HK$ account.

There are some companies that will deposit it into an overseas account but some companies place the cost associated with the transfer back onto the employee.

Several professional colleagues I know do this and they are expats but not on a full 'traditional' package more like a hybrid expat package. I believe, they all had to negiotate for these terms with their companies.

I am paid in USD to a US account, but the company pays for one transfer a month (and I don't need more than that).

1/3 eur at home, 2/3 honkie here.

Being expat is supposed to be temporary, therefor the 1/3 at home in eur, as to cover your ungoing expanses (if any) and 2/3 in honkie as to cover your daily cost of living.
