My old car I have an old, classic Citroen and thinking of bringing it with me to HK. Does anybody know off-hand whether there are any laws that prohibit cars of a certain age to be on HK roads? Also, is easy to find leaded fuel in HK? And, by any chance, does anybody know of a good DS mechanic in HK! For interest sake, it's a 1972 Citroen DS.

Have a look here: http://www.td.gov.hk/public_services..._mot/index.htm There is a 35% import tax, they won't licence it if it's left-hand drive, and it has to meet environmental standards... And a quick look at the websites for Shell and Caltex doesn't find any mention of leaded fuel, so that may be a problem too. (In fact a quick Google suggests that leaded fuel has been banned here since 1999.) Last edited by PDLM; 02-07-2007 at 04:01 AM.

Lead fuel additive is available at all of the larger service stations and speed shops, you pour one container in to your tank each time you fill up full. Leaded fuel is a thing of the past. Remember that humidity is very high here, if I was considering a prized classic car to be imported to HK, I probably wouldnt do it, best to leave classics in a nice dry country, where cars can be properly garaged, not left in damp underground car parks, or worse still left outside for the rats to systematically chew at all the rubber/foam components. I do however, know of a 60 year old British man who specialises in pre 70's car service and restoration, he lives in the Sai Kung district... The only person I would ever get to work on one of my vehicles is him. If you have the right people to help maintain your car ( very rare in HK ) and if you can properly house your vehicle from the humidity ( near impossible ), you will be tear free.

just got one question? have you been to Hong Kong before? IF not then better come to HOn gkong first and then decide to bring your car here. Quite opposite to UK, Hong kong usually have new model cars, it may be odd to have that old car here. still i dont discourage you if you really love your car you can bring, who cares what people says. My father used one car holw of his life, even i bought new one for him btu still he liked his old car. |

Ha Ha any car enthusiast with half an idea about classic cars, knows that the Citroen DS was the key car design that changed the automotive world, it inspired the automotive shape, to a level that has pretty much remained with us even today. Not bad for a design that was launched in the 1950's. Turning the humpy styled Chevy's and Morris's of the day on their ear, almost alien for the day when first shown at the paris motor show. I am a bit of a auto enthusiast, I also like the 84Citroen CS Pallas too, and Peugeot's 504 ( 75 model) also, the CS Pallas was one really futuristic looking piece of kit, compared to everything else which was mostly boxy during the 80's styles of the time. Nice as it might be to see a Citroen DS running around on the roads of Hong Kong, I can just see it being consumed by the humidity in area's of rust and really playing havoc with the auto electrics, also having local Chinese mechanics improvise the factory loom with their idea of how to wire a car is going to just spoil the thing when its serviced, unless a specialist who wont modify things over the original spec. People like this are very hard to find in HK. a 1950's Citroen DS below http://www.flickr.com/photo_zoom.gne...57594365705804 a very late 1960's or very early 70's model below http://www.flickr.com/photo_zoom.gne...6967854&size=m Takes a bit of a bohemian type of personality to understand and enjoy cars of this level of cool. It means you have good taste, and willing to preserve great things, that are worthy. Last edited by Skyhook; 03-07-2007 at 01:19 AM.
