Pass thru router for Now TV setup

I need to put a wireless router in my lounge and would like to know if anyone has a router in between their NOW Broadband TV set top box and their ADSL modem.

I know that NOW don't officially support this but there must be a router that allows the NOW signal to pass thru it without turning it to garbage.. mustn't there?

Thumbs up Buffalo Wi-Fi "g" Router + NOW TV

Well, my ex-neighbor had a Buffalo Wi-Fi before acquiring a "Now" device which was attached to it.

The combination certainly worked okay for him.

Perhaps you'd like to purchase the Buffalo router from me?

I'm about to advertise it here anyway.

$250 with set-up disk. {I never even bothered with the CDROM to set it up to test on my system}.

Nuts&Bolts -- I'd bet $250 that the router was connected to the ADSL modem and so was the NOW device.

i.e. The router was not in-between the ADSL and the NOW device.

+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

Well I really can't answer that, except to say that from what I saw, the neighbor appeared to have had exactly the same NEC ADSL modem from PCCW as I use, and that PCCW appeared to run a [tatty] cream colored telephone style [4 or 6 wire I think] cable between the Buffalo router & the NOW device.

I never took too much interest in the system 'cos :

1) I thought the additional "NOW" wiring was unsightly.

2) My modem's position in a far room would have meant even longer lengths of unsightly PCCW hook-up wiring, and that was something I wouldn't tolerate.

I guess that only PCCW or some other "NOW" user can answer as to whether their "NOW" connection can come out of a spare router port if they are using a router.

Unfortunately, I'm not in a position to quiz him now about his set-up.

thanks for the offer..

My modem is in the study and I inherited some weird wiring where the wire from the modem plugs into the wall through another telephone socket and then out of the wall (not same wall) in the lounge into the NOW box.

The Missus wants to run a machine in the lounge dining room, and as we have finally cancelled our cable TV subscription we need the Now TV box connected again, hence my desire for this setup, and my inability to take another cable from my existing router in the study.

I may try testing some configs of my current devices and if I get anywhere I may take you up on the buffalo offer. Please advertise though.. don't wait for me as I am gonna be travelling for a while..

Cheers

Hi I got it set up with 2 wireless routers.
You need one router in server mode with wan setting disabled. This one connects to the adsl modem.
The other in client mode connectting to the decoder.

The idea is:
adsl modem->ap 1-------------ap 2-> decoder

The thing is that the decoder will dial up on its own so you have to disable pppoe or wan on the first router.

I did manage to watch now tv using wireless connection but the video quality is poor. I suspect it has to do with the bandwith of the wireless network. They say it is 54mbs, which in theory should be more than enough for now tv.

Ohter possible reason is that the first router I use is in dd wrt firmware, which was known for poor performance as a server, but with much more functionality.

Will change a router tomorrow and keep you posted.
