Dog Allergy

Hey,
Just wondering does anyone know if there are any tablets/medicine one can take in order to overcome a dog allergy. I really want to get a dog but my bf is allergic (cats/dogs affect his breathing). If anyone has any experience with this please let me know.
Thanks!

Over the counter allergy medicines will help, depending on the severity of his allergy, but they are not a long-term fix and they have irritating side-effects for most people. Depending on the actual cause of the allergy, there are some prescription injections administered periodically by a physician that can help. Or, just consider a dog breed that does not produce the hair and dander that typically cause human pet allergies (ie. poodles, and to a lesser extent other non-shedding breeds like shiz-tzus).

No specific medicines that really work that I am aware of.

There are many things that people suggest for both animals and the owner but when put to test most of them seem to fail (drug called acepromazine was the most promising that I have heard of but doesn't appear to work).

Your best bet is to try to find a dog that doesn't shed much hair as usually it is the hair and the dead skin that is shed with it that most people are actually allergic to.

A good start would be a dog like a poodle - I think your best bet though would be to visit a variety of different dogs in different environments and see if there are any that he doesn't react to.

If he reacts to them all then probably not a good idea to geta dog (unless you want rid of the boyfriend...)

Growing up my Mom and myself suffer from dog allergies however my bro and sis REALLY wanted a dog. The doctor recommended that she consider getting a 'Bichon Frise' as they do not not go through a cyclical shedding process.

Here are some websites to help you begin your research.

I agree with PacMan this si something that you and your bf need to both agree on - unless you want to get rid of your bf.
