Hong Kong invaded by China? OK, so not quite what you may be expecting but this article is quite interesting. http://www.timesonline.co.uk/tol/new...cle1977594.ece

Another case of never let the truth get in the way of a good story. This guy quoted just blows his own importance out of all proportion and those of us with any learning already know that China held all the aces, that the UK had started talking in 1977, the 67 riots came in the death throws of the Cultural Revolution where Maos lot would put their name to anything radical but in 99% of the time never complete. Plus a time of " the World Socialist Uprisings ". In 67 my friends and I had applied for and been sent, the " Little Red Book " to try to get an education, hands on, whilst getting three square meals a day, unlike the Chinese at that time! Its where my enthusiasm for seeing through the spin and getting to the nub of the matter started. TLRB has a high spin cyle and 80% unoriginal thought. Just like the guy quoted in the article. Again they trot out the Jung Chang and Jon Halliday book for supporting any article about China bashing. Loved the book, hated the accuracy of certain " known " events and habits. In the case of any reasonable person. Reading it should ring anyones alarm bells that Deng Xiaoping is not substantively mentioned until the last chapter and about 4 prior references amount to historical quotes. He is made to appear whiter than white and like a noble knight coming to Chinas' rescue. They have no interest in hurting anyone whos family could hurt back PLUS its not in anyones interest to vilify a Saint in the eyes of prospective paying customers. Tianamen is not important in selling their book. The Times took on tabloid format in more ways than one. Its a pity to see such a " Holy Grail " treated in such a way.

Boris - It is also common for brit media to do their propaganda bit ... "things were so good during the Raj" when independence days of the colonies show up.

I did a course once where the trainer enthralled us all with an anecdote about how some of his Chinese students once did a presentation on China's military build up in the Taiwan strait, the audience consisted of quite a few Taiwanese so it caused a little bit of embarrassment (for the teacher, not for the Chinese) Last edited by Pekkerhead; 27-06-2007 at 04:09 PM.

That's nothing, my professor in college once brought in a group speaker who threw up a picture of the tank guy from the Tiananmen Square protests...the one where that one student is standing in front of a line of tanks about to get run over. He said "That's what my job's like". I spoke up and asked "You die for a living?"

If you ask me, I think they are bluffing. They won't dare invade either Hong Kong or Taiwan. There's too much to lose and too much at risk.
