| | | All dogs from China have to go through quarantine on arrival in HK.
I think it's something like 4 months but you'd need to check with AFCD or an export company to get latest advice.
Up to date records and vaccines make no difference.

Now bringing a husky to HK would be a severe punishment IMHO. what did the poor dog do to deserve that?
Besides, most people here are living in flats (not houses) and large animals in flats is a no-no (often forbidden).
Just my two cents but hey this is a "free city".

| | | Hong Kong would probably be a better option than many parts of China, assuming that there was enough room in the accomodation, that walking is kept regular/sufficient and that the coat gets clipped during the hotter weather to help with heat loss.
But agree HK is not the ideal environment for a husky.

| | | PC man, why would hong kong ever be better than china? A husky would be great if they are from northern china or the mountainous region throughout china. Also, you shouldn't really trim most dogs' coat as they are there to protect them eg. sunburn, undercoat. a dog doesnt lose heat through it coat. | |

| | | Hi Lulumay,
In China dog owners are always at the mercy of the local officials who have been known at the first sign of rabies in an area to authorise the destruction of all dogs within that area.
I'd be happier with a dog in a non-ideal environment than to always be at the mercy of local politics.
Re- shaving - again I'll accept you are correct that they don't strictly speaking lose heat through the coat but the coat acts as insulation so shaving does actively improve the ability of many dogs to cope with the hotter weather here over summer.
With the acception of few breeds that are prone to coat issues, the hair always grows back so unless showing is a concern, there is no issue with shaving.

| | | I got him in Shanghai and he's been a part of the our family for four years,I can't just abandon him or give him away.I know the weather in HK is not suited to this type of dog but we have a big place and someone who can walk him everyday,so other than packing him off back to Sydney I'm stuck for options.
Strange but in China most people are terrified of him and he's friendly to a fault. What about the registration procedure in HK?
Thanks for the advice anyway,I will check it out.

| | | I've had 2 siberian huskies .. Did obedience, agility and harness training with them. and trust me he'l be able to adapt to the weather just fine. as long as you have ample amounts of time to provide exercise for him and judging from what you're saying, you will be, then you're fine. There's many Siberians out in HK anyways, and they all seem happy as can be. Saw quite a few in Discovery Bay where I'm from.. and i'm sure theres lots others throughout HK. There's a Siberian Husky group too that you can look up online, I'm sure they can provide you with a lot of tips and suggestions on how to accommodate the dog for HK Living.
It gets really hot and humid here in massachusetts and my 2 did fine. They did however have their own room that was airconditioned and had a dog door so they were able to go in and out as pleased.. But if you just took the dog out early mornings and at night for exercise, he won't be complaining.
Shaving the Coat is not a good idea however. The coat is there for a reason, the doublecoat that is. For the summer they shed out so they only have the guard hairs. it does provide protection from the suns harmful rays but also keeps them cool (imagine that). The under goat does shed out so they will be fine, and then the dog itself will adapt to the climate change of HK so he may not grow much of an under coat at all through out the year. The coat acts as protection, insulation during winter when it gets real cold , and in the summer keeps them cool as well.. shaving actually makes the breed get hotter and they WILL be more prone to getting heat strokes if you shave them. | | Tools | Search | | | | | Rate This Thread | | | All times are GMT +8.
