to be fair to them, its a cutthroad business.
they want to keep as much from you as possible in case you go directly to the employer or go thru another agent.

as to them not understanding the business. this part i agree is quite true. but unless you are specific and tell them you only want this this and that, then you can't fault them.

i was placed on this job due to the insistent of the HH (which i never really liked 8-).. else i wldn't have spoken to them as i never thought of going this direction in the first place.

actually i work in a staffing company.
agree that there are different practices among the industries. it's just a matter of whether they are meeting you before or after the interview arrangement of you and the client.

most of the time, espcially for senior profile candidates we would interview them 1st since we would like to know what they want in order to avoid the chance of mis-matching.

to be honest, for your sake, u should meet the recruiter since some agents are not that professional. I guess you also don't wish your resume being sent over and over among different companies without letting you know. The meeting time with recruiter normally is very flexible.

Just like me, now, I have relocated to Singapore, depends on the jobs vacancies on hand, I do need to look for / contact candidates who are in HK, PRC, Japan or the States etc. In this case I would arrange a net meeting with them. Anyway, it's flexible

wish you can get a nice job in HK and if got any problem, no harm to post it here and see if there's anything I can help

I too will be working in Recruitment in Hong Kong. having a number of years in the feild i can say that setting up meetings in many companies is a standard procedure. I know where I am in the UK this is actually a legal precedence, used as a way of preventing identity theft and people cloning CV's. But it will be more than likely a 30 minuite exploratory interview, where the emphesis will be on the 'candidate' themselves ie asking specific questions about 'them' and what 'they' want in a new role. Recruitment in Asia nowadays is very much a candidate lead market and companies are trying to musclue in on the right people for their business.

I would tell your fried there is nothing to fear, if they are a good company they will concerntrate on THEIR needs and find them something they want.

PS. Anyone working in construction looking for a new role. let me know

Kind Regards

Thom

I was a recruitment agent for robert half international. We always met people before we sent applications over as people can look great on paper and on the phone but absolute tards in reality. We needed to know they would perform at interview and make us commision! (thats the whole point of being an agent!)

If an agent likes you, you'll get a good job with them as they know they can make money out of you.

agree with LiXu. its lways good to recommend one who can make it out rather than hundreds who cant clear even the first round.
