saving coins (again)

hello there

i have a question which has been asked a few times already: does anyone know a bank who accept coins (in a piggy bank, not seperated)?

i contacted hangseng bank and they charge 50$ if seperated, otherwise 100$. thats ridiculous.
i save my change in a piggy bank and want to put them
into a saving account later.
is there any bank out there doing that for free?

thanks
sandra

Unfortunately coins are only legal tender in smallish quantities, so the banks are under no obligation to accept large quantities without charge. I think essentially you're going to have to find another way to manage your savings.

In the meantime, the bank is obliged to accept silever coins ($1, $2, $5) up to $100 in total, but bronze coins (10c, 20c, 50c) only up to $2 in total, per transaction.

But having said that, if you have time I don't see that the bank could legally refuse you paying the coins in $2/$100 at a time like that - each time being a separate transaction.

Ran into a similar problem a few months ago and not all shops were taking the coins but managed to find a 7-11 that took all of the coins and added the funds to my Octopus card.

The worker at 7-11 thought it was pretty funny till he realized at the end of his shift he was going to have to count out the draw. Luckily the transaction had already taken place!

Make bundles of coins to make a particular denomination.. like put a stack of 10 10c coins and tape them together.. Presto u have $1.. Do similiarly for other denomination.. for $1 & $2 make stacks of $10 each... U can use it in your daily transactions... And people will be happier to accept it as its easier to count and manage...
Just my 10 cents worth...

I usually try to use them to pay bus fares aso... frankly that's quite annoying at times. Luckily they've got those 10-dollar-bills now as opposed to the coins a few years ago.

Actually, I would have to say that is debatable as people live in different locations with different access to different modes of transportation.

If that was the case then why is there always a line for the bus?

Many people that do not have easy access to the MTR , people who live in NT and take the bus to and from work in Southern Kowloon and Hong Kong Island (just one example).

I hate to bring the coin everytime I go out also.

But I will bring some coins while I going out for a while to buy some stuff in near by area. Such as, go to wet market for some fruits, buying newspaper, send my clothes to laundry...etc.

But not paying the whole amount with 10, 20 or 50 cents coin. For higher amount like go to laundry, I will mixed $10, $5, $2, $1 coins with the others coin, they are happy to receive it. I used most of my coin at laundry as laundry expenses (Most of the time, my coins not enough to pay my laundry expenses.) Since have to bring the clothes out, why not bring the coins together.

Try to avoid use cash if the shop have Octopus or EPS facility.

May I ask you a question, Where you get the coins? For me, I didn't get too many coins from my daily expenses.
