I wouldn't go near that thing. Had it been built pre-97, it probably wouldn't have the same types of problems.

Well, they had to say it was negligence. Negligence can be a once-off non-recurring isolated incident. Soooo....the show, I mean, the cable car can go on.

Now if it were a design defect or, worse still, someone made a boo boo in the feasibility study for the project, that would be disastrous, wouldn't it?

Tearing up Skyrail contract could be very costly, warns legislator

Scarlett Chiang

Tuesday, September 18, 2007

A lawmaker has warned of the financial implications of terminating the contract with Skyrail- ITM, which operates the trouble-plagued cable car system at Ngong Ping 360.

Andrew Cheng Kar-foo, who chairs the Legislative Council's transport panel, said the government and MTR Corp (0066), which owns the Lantau project, should avoid taking such drastic action if there is no evidence that the Australian company is to blame for the plunge of a cable car cabin in June.

He warned that the government may have to foot a huge legal bill if it cancels the 20-year contract with the firm. "We should always be cautious with the matter. If the company decides to claim damages, the case will go before the court and the government could face massive compensation claims."

let's put it this way, not sure wat the contract terms are, but if its a design build and operate contract, there's no difference. nobody is going to take that from now onwards.

on the other hand, if its just maintenance contract, then HKSAR is going to have a white elephant sitting there for the next 20 years and still paying the fees.

I am sure the Australia company was at fault. Poor design, bad workmanship, and pi** poor management. Don't blame the Hong Kongers who followed instructions. My guess is it should be closed for good. I would not ride on it after what has happened. Even the one-cable is not enough, as some companies had suggested a two-cable system.

Stay away if you value your life.
