| | | Slingbox... Has anyone set up a slingbox?
What is sling player like?
Would be interested to hear from users of this technology and whether it is any good.

| | I have used ORB, http://www.orb.com to stream tv and it has worked great. It is a free program, all you need is a tv tuner card in your computer.
Slingbox I have heard good things about. I will be setting one up in a couple of months. I assume it works better than ORB since it is dedicated hardware and not running on Windows.

Its key to note that the most important part about setting up the slingbox is the connection speed of the internet at the "host" location (more specifically the upload speed). If you have a high upload speed, the quality of the video you will see on a player with any boadband connection will be very good.
I highly reccommend it.

| | | Damn, it would be nice to be able to watch US TV. Wish I had one set up. The way things are going, though, I might be moving back to the US next year... | |

I highly reccommend it. | Yeh, need to find a dedicated connection to upload the data, set up a sky decoder and have a slingbox installed. Trouble is where......???
Places I can use all have broadband connections which are in use :-(

Ummm, Actually no, you don't need a dedicated connection for Slingbox (in fact it needs to be connected to the PC)... Mine is at my friend's house in US who has a broadband modem (on the same connection he uses for his internet) and it works just fine. And he's on-line qite a bit, it doesn't hurt the performace much.
However, the best use out of Slingbox is that you can control up to 4 devices remotely (while this is rather useless for things like DVD Players and VCR's, it works great for "On Demand" cable boxes, or DVR (i.e. Tivo, etc.). Thus, you can record your shows and view them in your own time zone whenever you want.

| | | my understanding is you place a router after the incoming broadband line, then one connection from router to your slinbox, others to the host's PC, TV box, etc. then link the TV box, DVR, VCR (yes it works) to slingbox and enjoy...correct me if i'm mistaken as I want to set one up this summer | |

| | Watch one of the setup tutorial videos Here depending on which type of slingbox you buy. I am going to get the basic one. You really don't even need a host pc. You only need that for the initial setup I believe. | |

Correct, once the slingbox obtains the I.P. address during the initial set-up, you're done. The host PC can be turned off.

| | | yeah, what I meant was the host pc (if there was one) would share the connection via the router | | Tools | Search | | | | | Rate This Thread | | | All times are GMT +8. The time now is 09:42 AM. | Partners |
