sick leave According to the Employement Ordinance, every employee in HK is entitled to 36 days paid sick leave (up to 84 if additional documents are provided). It also states that contracts which reduce any right conferred to the empolee by the Ordinance shall be void. I assume that means no exemptions at all? Usually I would assume that paid sick leave means full pay without deductions. But the first document has a paragraph about a "sickness allowance" of 4/5 of the normal wages. Does this mean that sick leave will generally compensated with 4/5 of the usually salary, or that this allowance only kicks in after the sick leave days are used up? I don't think that the document is written very clearly. Anybody familiar with this? Appreciate any help.

It all seems very clear to me. Sick days are paid at 80% of normal salary. You are entitled to a number of sick days determined by your length of continuous service. After your entitlement of sick days is used up then you have no more entitlement. That means you don't get paid. What exactly is unclear?

Thanks. I think the terms they used got me confused. Plus the fact that it was news for me that it is actually possible to deduct some pay even for a single sick day. We currently pay all our staff 100% even if they would fall sick the max number of days.

technically, its up to the company, according to labour law you have to be sick more than 3-4 days before you can get 3/4 of your daily salary, if your only sick for one day then the company can deduct your salary. Labour law mostly protects companies and not workers.
