New World plan broke in the news up here back at Easter.
Also bought a lot of the unused land around the site.
Didn't realise the hotel was part of the plan but had heard they were buying that as well.

Plan is a whole estate of 8 storey high flats in the area.

Lot of worried residents as infrastructure struggles already especially at weekends.

Thanks for your advise HKchigger. You are understanding how newbies to Hong Kong might feel
We would like an area where we can access shops/recreation/restaurants that are slightly familiar at first. We do have a younge child. We have travelled all over south east asia but living there is a different story. I will suss out your suggestion. Is Kowloon Tong within resonable travelling distance to sai kung? Its just so hard to find a descent map of hong kong over the internet. Not sure if we will be getting a car. Do you find they are included in employment packages at all?
Thanks for all advise everyone.

Very unlikely for a car to be included in an employment package. Happens of course, but at the price of cars and how easy public transport is, it is a rare thing.

I am really leaning towards North Point, it has good shopping and transport links, and it close on the MTR/Bus from Central districts where you can find more familiar foods.

I am not sure if Tseung Kwan O has serviced apartments. If so, there is a bus that goes from Tseung Kwan O up to Diamond Hill via the Sai Kung area roads. It doesn't go in to Sai Kung itself but it passes the TV City and UST if one of those places is where your husband works.

Kowloon Tong is an option, transport would not be that fast, but you could go to Diamond Hill station which is 3 stations and change to bus to Sai Kung. Bus 92.

sorry, just thought of another idea, it's a little bit of a far shot for someone new to Hong Kong, but may be similar to what you need in some ways. Worth at least a quick thought about.

The former airport hotel in Kowloon City. It is right on a main road heading towards the Choi Hung area/Kwun Tong etc. The hotel itself I have never been inside, but it looks decent enough and used to be one of the main hotels for the airport. (It had a footbridge from the building across to the airport) So I am sure it is not a dump. It is most likely low priced as now it is not a special spot. Kowloon City is famous for having so many different countries foods. It can be really tasty. There are some parks there too. Shopping isn't the greatest, but for day to day needs it is in Kowloon City, for your fun shopping it's a quick bus/mini bus ride to Mong Kok or even Diamond Hill.

The thing that has me thinking here is the fact it is really not far road wise from Choi Hung. You can take a taxi or bus on the main road heading for the Choi Hung area. (Make sure the MTR station and not the regular bus terminus) Then change to bus 92 which is at Choi Hung about to go up and over the hills to Sai Kung. So it's perfect spot to get on.

Let me know if you need more info on North Point, Kowloon City, or Tseung Kwan O.

Regal Oriental Hotel in Kowloon city is an option, not far from Choi Hung but why hasn't anybody suggested taking the mini bus from Choi Hung instead of the 92 bus? Much faster than taking any of the bus routes.

As long as you can get to Choi Hung MTR you can take the No. 1A mini bus from the C2 exit off the MTR. There is also a mini bus from there that goes to Hang Hau (just off Tseung Kwan O, which passes through a part of Clearwater Bay which is also considered to be a part of Sai Kung).

I live in SK and work in Central and commute everyday, it really is not so difficult using the public transport in HK. We have a car also but you'll work out whether it saves the hassle/time/money of driving or cummuting around in Hong Kong.

Kowloon tong is about 30 mins away from Sai Kung.

There is a minibus that passes very close to it on the way to Mongkok (also passes the Regal Kai Tak that was mentioned by HKChigger) - easy to get from Sai Kung to Mongkok but have to go into Mongkok to get back...

Kowloon Tong would class as a nice area for a family I think but not so sure about Choi Hung/Kowloon City.

Another thought - will the company not set something up until you get on your feet?

They may have someone they use already.

Kowloon Tong looks closer to sai kung than kowloon city or is KC closer to the train? There is the aust school in kowloon tong so that could be a draw card.
PC man you said kowloon tong is 30mins from sai kung. Is that by private car or taking train and bus?. Sooo confused!
I would have thought cwb had serviced apts but alas no.
Thanks again for all your help.

Kowloon City is closer than Kowloon Tong by transport.

Travelled to Mongkok last night in 40 mins and pass Kowloon Tong on the way but not the centre of Kowloon Tong - reckon it was at about 30 mins.
That was on a public minibus.

No other transport except road to Sai kung (unless you own a boat I suppose...).

Still think Ma on Shan or Tseung Kwan O would be best place for close by serviced appartments - both have a direct link to Sai Kung in form of bus or minibus.

PKRS is there anyway you could tell us more about WHERE you are working. Right now we are all telling you how to get to the main Sai Kung Town centre. But, if you work a little ways out more towards Clear Water Bay transport options may change a little.
