Does anyone have any recommendations for where I can buy a medium to high (?) end stereo system at a competitive price? I am looking for a fairly compact sized one that plays CD's and ideally songs from my ipod with good quality sound. Any recommendations for audio type shops with a good range would be appreciated. I've seen the audio shop in Central but suspect it is overpriced. Been to Fortress and Shenzhen (!) but found nothing suitable there.

I recently got a lower end Onkyo set in mongkok, if you're willing to venture over to the Kowloon side. There's a building that you can basically go to any of a number of floors and they should be able to take care of you.

The place is called the Yau Shing Commercial Centre, and I believe I bought my stereo in the shop on the 13th floor, but basically you can press any of the buttons from the 3rd floor up and you'll have a good chance at getting an audio shop.

Pay cash or EPS and you can probably bargain around 5-10% at least. That should pay for the cab ride home with the big box (I penny pinched and hauled it on the MTR).

There's a place on Queen Victoria Road, off Queen's Road, near Queen's Road 100, that sells electronics at about 5 to 15% lower than major shops like Fortress and Citicall. It's right next to Citicall. Got my hubby an ipod there. They do have stereos there I don't know what sort of range do they have.

Thanks for these - any recommendations for places that are higher end than Fortress (but not absolute rip-offs)? Things seem to come at extremes here in HK..

I bought a KEF system for a client a few weeks ago from Times Square, one of the shops that specialise in mid to high end gear.
It was a complete system with amplifier built into the sub-woofer, 5 satellite speakers and a DVD player. It was heavily reduced as a special, something they regularly do.
When we installed it the sound was absolutely mind-blowing for the amount of money we spent.
