Boat Mortgage

Can anyone give me advice on the best available options on getting a mortgage for a liveaboard? My primary currency is HKD. I currently bank with HSBC but they do not provide mortgages for liveaboard boats.

I am able to put 20% of the value upfront at the moment but that might increase by the time i need to take it out. i am also open to and interested in different currency based mortgages too.eg yen based. (In this respect i am not so much interested in whether they are a good idea but whether they are available).

I'd appreciate any advice. Thanks in advance!

http://www.orix.co.jp/grp/co_e/world/gr_ci_asia.htm was listed in a IHT article as doing financing.

I'd say this is probably the best time to go talk to an IFA who is well connected with things other than "insurance policies".

Thanks KIA. i tend to agree, an IFA is probably the way forward but i'm hoping some guys inteh Marina might see this and give me some leads.

I've seen that article. I've got my debenture and have the boat lined up...almost there. It really is a no brainer with house prices being so ridiculous here.

I also chased up the ORIX lead but it seems their mortgage business was bought out by an american firm. Thats as far as i've got on them...still looking for more info.

Are you buying the boat through a broker or directly from the owner?

I have a feeling large brokers like Simpson Marine might have some options lined up before you buy.

Just as an update....Someone outside of the forum helped me out with the Orix connection...they, as well as the others i have found offer prime minus 1 i.e 7% mortgage. They have been been the more helpful and perhaps more human people to speak to and have very few charges. So far i would recommend them but i still live in hope of finding a better option. Thanks for your help KIA.
