Advice re: Teaching in HK

I am a NET Teacher and want to work, but I'm not sure how to proceed or what pays decently. I've seen some jobs offering very low pay of $150ph and I wouldn't feel that was worth my time. Anyone got advice on how it pays to work at HKIS, Canadian IS, ESF, or local schools? Would I be allowed to tutor on the side? Do you know if there is much demand for this during the day? I'd prefer not to take time away from my family/children. I would like a half-time position or one as a Substitute Teacher. Any ideas on what the conditions and pay would be like? I'd be grateful for your help!!!!!!!!!!

I'm here on my husband's work permit and I'd like to work either full or p/time. I have a degree in English Literature, a degree in Education, qualifications in teaching primary, middle and secondary school. I've also taught ESL to adults. I'm halfway done my Master's degree in education.

hi
I went through this myself when we moved here in January. I have similar qualifications to you - you do need the paper work to prove them with employers by the way - and sent my cvto all schools i could find on hong kong island and kowloon. i also applied for NET scheme with www.emb.gov.hk.

If you want to see salaries for international schools the best bet is to look at www.esf.edu.hk which gives you an idea of their salary range and positions available at the moment.
You can also check out the classified post website : http://www.classifiedpost.com/jscomm...e=1&lcid=HK.EN
I know this is a long link but it takes you to the update pages where educational jobs are advertised. The largest number of adverts go up on a Saturday.

The usual contracts stipulate you cannot tutor any children the school already teaches and if you want to tutor you have to get written permission from your employer. In practice a lot of teachers do tutor and their employers don't know.

You will have to get your own work visa as well which any employer shoudl sponsor for you if they are employing you on a contract. These take about 6 weeks to get.

hope this helps - any more questions ask!
Good Luck
